Here’s a checklist to help you get your estate organised
Here’s a checklist to help you get your estate (or that of a loved one) organised! Plan well. Live well.
- Do you have a valid Will and does it need updating? You should get a Last Will and Testament drafted when you become an adult, or as soon as you acquire assets. And have it updated after major life events like marriage, divorce, death, or birth.
- Have you nominated beneficiaries in your Life Policies? Having nominated beneficiaries for all your Life Policies means that the Life Policies could bypass the Estate’s winding-up process and may lead to a significant saving in fees.
- Do you have the originals and copies of all your important documents filed or kept in secure places, and have someone you trust know where to find them?
Here is a list of important documents:
- Your Last Will and Testament;
- Property documents: Title Deeds, bond contracts, motor vehicle registration documents, etc;
- Financial instruments and documents: existing bank accounts, life policies, funeral policies, share certificates investments, etc;
- Personal documents: These include your ID book, Passport, SASSA card, marriage certificate, any relevant death certificates of spouse or children, divorce orders, etc.
I hope that this checklist has assisted you in thinking through some essential organisational matters for your Estate and that of your loved ones.
